Sydney’s inner west has a contemporary new aquatic and fitness centre. Including nine dedicated spaces, the Ashfield Aquatic Centre redevelopment is expected to be used by 500,000 visitors annually for a variety of fitness and community related activities.

Redevelopment of the Ashfield Aquatic Centre, originally opened in 1962, was an opportunity for the Inner West Council to create a mixed-use community aquatic and sports centre. While renovating was an option, a rebuild was recommended as the best long-term solution for this community facility.

Designed by Brewster Hjorth Architects, a firm with an extensive aquatic and leisure centre design portfolio, the new resort-like venue includes five swimming pools, a 1000 square metre Technogym-equipped health and fitness centre, cafe, creche, spa and sauna. Accessible to everyone, the aquatic centre has been thoughtfully designed with fully accessible changing rooms, hearing loops for hearing impaired visitors, wheelchair hoists and ramps.

KingZip Linea was specified for use on the roof. The project featured bull nose detail and Brewster Hjorth felt KingZip would meet the aesthetic requirements as well as the construction and building performance needs. KingZip Linea delivers design flexibility as it can be tapered or smooth curved to 5 metre convex. This project required 400 mm wide panels in aluminium to be able to make the radius. KingZip provides exceptional structural, thermal, acoustic and fire performance, as well as long-term protection against the corrosive environment associated with an aquatic centre.
