Bronte House by the beach features Escea gas fireplace

The sleek Escea DS1150 gas fireplace at Bronte House is flanked with built-in bench seating.

This family home designed by Kate Bell sits in a laid-back Sydney suburb by the beach, and it features the sleek Escea DS1150 gas fireplace. This truly frameless fireplace, complemented by a zero clearance rating and flexible flue technology, meant no compromise was made for the design of this home.

The homeowner’s desire was for the fireplace to create a connection: not only for the family, but also to the surroundings, creating a sense of warmth throughout. The fireplace sits on an off-form concrete hearth with a Venetian plaster surround, achieving a perfect canvas for the fires’ impressive flame through the large glass window.

The ability to have combustible materials right up to the glass is a defining benefit that sets this fireplace apart from others, allowing it to become one with the wall and for artwork or televisions to be placed just 200 mm above the fire – especially important in narrow sites like Bronte House, where space is at a premium.

This feature also allowed built-in bench seating on either side of the Escea DS1150, providing a place for the family to comfortably connect, come together, and bask in the beautiful warmth of the fireplace: a key part of the brief for this home.

When met with decisions or challenges, Escea’s architectural advisory team was on hand to provide free advice to help answer questions and committed to ensuring the right fireplace solution for the build.

This family home embodies a sense of permanence. The use of hard-wearing, natural materials will see it thrive in its seaside locale, giving the home a robustness that lends itself to a love of living.
