About Common Ground Dickson

Common Ground Dickson is a six-storey building consisting of 40 affordable and social housing units with a mix of one, two and three bedroom layouts, as well as a cafe, communal green space and social services. The project is designed to provide long-term, high-quality housing options for people on low incomes and those facing chronic homelessness, particularly women, families and children.

The requirement

To provide functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor furniture for the shared common spaces, to be enjoyed by residents and visitors.

The challenges

  • Space utilisation: balancing the need for sufficient seating and community gathering spots without over-cluttering the common area or impeding resident mobility.
  • Safety considerations: ensuring the chosen furniture meets all safety standards and regulations, especially considering diverse age groups and varying physical capabilities of residents.
  • Durability and maintenance: finding sturdy, long-lasting furniture options that can withstand regular use and weather elements, with minimal maintenance requirements.
  • Inclusivity: ensuring the selected furniture adheres to all relevant disability regulations to create an inclusive and comfortable environment for residents of all abilities.
  • Social interaction: choosing furniture that promotes social interaction among residents, fostering a sense of community within the social housing complex.
  • Vandalism resistance: identifying robust furniture that can resist potential damage or vandalism, an aspect sometimes associated with shared spaces.

The solution

After evaluating the challenges and requirements, the client chose the Vienna setting with benches and Vienna seat with armrests, both with the Merbau slats.
