Spectacular perforated metal underpass, Como train station

24 April 2023
Perforated metal underpass by Arrow Metal installed for Como train station.

A spectacular gold perforated metal underpass featuring Arrow Metal pattern is giving Como train station passengers a first-class experience from path to platform.

The Arrow Metal team collaborated with DesignInc architects and DEGNAN builders to clad the walkway and lift area as part of the station’s $20 million upgrade, perforating each panel in Arrow Metal's Pattern-2319 design, an energetic mix of small to medium perforations.

Veiled in a luxurious Champagne Gold finish, the panels were additionally customized by Arrow Metal's expert design team to include the station’s name, whilst maintaining pattern continuation and style.

How Como Station’s perforated metal underpass panels were made

To create Como station’s unique underpass, each 3 mm aluminium panel had to be individually perforated and cut to a specific size and shape, to match the angular installation requirements. Using supplied CAD files, each panel was punched with unperforated margins for seamless pattern flow.

For the Como wording, Arrow Metal’s design team used only one hole size for the font, creating subtle and sophisticated signage that stands out amongst scattered Pattern-2319.

Arrow Metal's new pattern features five different diameters of holes placed at random in a straight pitch. Drawn by its in-house team, Pattern-2319 profile is for architects and designers wanting high-end, statement perforated metal designs, following on from its geometric Deco range and hexagon Cosmic collection.

One of the most eye-catching design features of Como station’s perforated metal underpass is the open shaft from the platform above, which floods the walkway with natural light.

This made a Champagne Gold anodised finish the ideal choice for the panels, to not only reflect the daylight but to contrast with the shaft’s surrounding safety mesh.

Other innovative design features at Como train station include a new solar photovoltaic glass canopy system that will provide the station with clean energy. Delivered through Transport for NSW Transport Access Program, Como station also has improved accessibility, amenities, CCTV, and lighting, creating a modern and safe transport hub for the whole community.
