Perforated balustrade creates safe and stylish stairs

A custom perforated mild steel balustrade by Arrow Metal at 100 Mount St in North Sydney.

Perforated mild steel balustrade panels manufactured by Arrow Metal have helped to transform the fire stairs at North Sydney’s tallest commercial building from functional to focal point.

Unlike a typical fire escape, the stairs at 100 Mount Street, North Sydney, are a key architectural feature. Complementing the building’s cross-braced, glazed exoskeleton facade, the glass-enclosed stairwell is the main access for each office level of the 42,100 m2 building – which means it not only had to meet all safety regulations but also achieve the architect’s aesthetic vision.

To create the balustrade for 100 Mount Street’s signature stairs, the Arrow Metal team perforated over 300 mild steel panels in pattern P246 – a classic in-stock round shape design that features 9.5 mm diameter holes in a staggered pitch with 40% open area.

Each perforated panel was individually designed and profiled by Arrow Metal's expert team to fit its place on the stairwell. This involved careful adjustment of the pattern to ensure that the holes were always parallel to panel edges for a uniform appearance. Selected panels were also folded for an exact pattern match and fit on site.

Panels were powdercoated to create a light and bright feature that matches the modern interior of the prestigious 35-storey boutique building.

A landmark on the North Sydney CBD skyline with panoramic views across Sydney Harbour, 100 Mount Street is a Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) 5-Star Green Star design and has also achieved 5-star National Australian Built Environment Ratings System (NABERS).

The innovative building offers the latest in smart technology, connectivity and sustainable architecture. Features include a chilled beam system to minimize energy consumption, a closed cavity facade with automated blinds and rainwater harvesting.

Situated in a prime location near to the new upcoming North Sydney Metro Station, the tower’s impressive 8 m high commercial lobby boasts digital artwork together with dedicated dining and retail levels and basement parking. Major tenants of 100 Mount Street include Laing O’ Rourke and NBN Co.
