Kangaroo Bay Pavilion

12 November 2020
Christie barbecues were specified for the award-winning Kangaroo Bay Pavilion.

The award-winning Kangaroo Bay Pavilion includes a bespoke shelter, accessible communal barbecues and changing facilities and storage. One of Hobart’s iconic public open spaces, it was recently redeveloped by City of Clarence as part of the Kangaroo Bay Urban Design Plan.

The Plan includes an array of modern recreation facilities in a community-driven space that promotes outdoor play and social gathering. One of the key features in the redevelopment is the inclusion of shared cooking facilities. Council installed two Christie Barbecues cooktops into custom-made, wheelchair accessible cabinets. The community space’s excellent design won both the Small Project Architecture Award and the Alan C Walker Award at the 2019 Tasmanian Architecture Awards.

Situated in the heart of Hobart’s eastern shore, the Pavilion is located in a linear park that combines active and passive recreation amenities, public art installations, and walking trails. Filled with wooden sailing boats and draped netting that faces the Derwent River, the playground draws connections to the local area’s rich fishing history. The view is varied and compelling, with the mass of sailing boats positioned in the cove against the backdrop of Mt Wellington. The park is designed to integrate the community. It allows the whole family to bask in the value of communal outdoor activities.
