The renovation of the Blue Mountains station, which included new lifts, parking spaces and amenities, is designed to improve accessibility under the Transport for NSW Transport Access Program. The program gives passengers a better, safer and more seamless public transport experience.

A key element of the project was the creation of a safe and accessible passenger walkway, which was made using Arrow Metal perforated aluminium panels. But instead of a single, uniform perforation, the architect’s design for the custom perforated sheet metal had multiple perforation styles, for visual interest and modern appeal.

Custom perforated sheet metal: Bespoke panels for Hazelbrook

The unusual pattern on Hazelbrook train station’s panels is almost 3D. The pattern at the very top features only outlines of geometric shapes. It slowly graduates to random filled in areas, creating shadows and a stacked, 3D-block effect. It finally evolves at the bottom into a solid panel, sprinkled with smaller-sized perforations.

To achieve this complex and unique visual effect, Arrow Metal split the design across two separate perforated metal sheets in each section, using CAD drawing for accurate pattern matching. Each panel duo was then joined together on site using “invisible” clear 6 mm polycarbonate, with no joins visible.

The base metal is a special 5052 grade of aluminium, which was sourced and shipped from interstate. 5052 grade aluminium is a high-strength yet lightweight metal with high corrosion resistance.

Working closely with the on-site teams, Arrow Metal delivered the panels to very tight timescales, achieving all deadlines to keep the train station upgrade running on time.

Arrow Metal expertise for infrastructure and transport projects

Hazelbrook train station is the latest infrastructure project the Arrow Metal team has worked on, showcasing the company’s expertise in large-scale multi-million-dollar transport developments.
