Boral Slimline bricks lead to a winning design
A 28-bed accommodation building for La Trobe University’s Wodonga campus was joint Overall Category and Commercial Category winner of the Think Brick 2012 Horbury Hunt awards. Designed by Melbourne based Billard Leece Partnership (BLP), the building was recognised for its creative use of brick.
Featuring Boral Elan 50mm bricks in Grey Nuance, La Mesa and Labassa, the slimline bricks were specified to play upon the scale of the building and accentuate the linear aspect of the landscape.
According to Rosemary Burne from BLP, the firm was commissioned to design and build a student residence on the greenfield site adjacent to the University. The colour choice of Boral slimline bricks included a blend of grey and brown tones to reflect the rural context, providing the brick building with a distinctive character and quality.
”The Boral Elan slimline brick range proved the perfect palette and profile to fit the concept, taking into account the building’s setting,” said Burne.
In the judges’ comments for the Horbury Hunt commercial award, the building is described as ‘simultaneously ethereal and weighty, hard and soft. These enigmatic qualities are achieved through the bold use of brick as a singular yet supple material. The strong, formal presence of the building is feathered into the landscape through the texture and tones of the brickwork’.
“The bricks add genuine design appeal to the building. Receiving the Think Brick 2012 Horbury Hunt Award speaks for itself,” added Burne.
