The first CodeMark certified timber weatherboard system in New Zealand

Thursday, 17th November, 2011

With all the recent attention on leaky homes, home owners and builders are looking for a more reliable cladding system. Timspec, a New Zealand timber distributer, have led the pack once again and delivered New Zealand’s first CodeMark certified timber cladding solution.

“We were proud to be the first major timber importer to be both FSC and PEFC Chain-of-Custody certified, which was a huge step forward for resource certification, and now we are proud to be the first company to offer a CodeMark certified timber cladding system, an equally huge step forward in the realm of construction and the consent process.” - Chris Wiffen, Joint Managing Director, Timspec

Timspec are a New Zealand owned and operated timber importer and distributer with three strategically placed branches servicing customers nation-wide. With a focus on customer service it should come as no surprise that they are always looking for ways to improve their timber products. They have spent over six months developing a timber cladding system and gaining CodeMark certification.

This is only the fourth product to be CodeMark certified in New Zealand and is the first timber cladding system.

“After considering the alternatives, we decided that all the extra effort required for CodeMark certification would be worth it in the long run. Now we are equipped to offer our customers the highest level of product assurance and help them achieve building consents quicker, easier and with more certainly than ever before.” - Rex Holmes, Joint Managing Director, Timspec The CodeMark product certification scheme is a voluntary scheme that provides an easily-understood and robust way to show that a building product or system meets the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. A CodeMark-certified product or construction method must be accepted by any building consent authority as complying with the Building Code, as long as it is used as specified.

The CodeMark scheme was established by the Building Act 2004 and is administered by the Department of Building and Housing. It has been developed jointly with the Australian Building Codes Board.

John Gardiner of the Department of Building and Housing says Timspec’s achievement of the fourth CodeMark certificate, which was issued by CertMark Australasia, shows the growing appreciation of the scheme.

“One of the main aims of CodeMark is to lift the standard of building quality and performance while encouraging product innovation.”

“CodeMark may not be the right choice for every building manufacturer or supplier, but CodeMark certification can make good business sense not only in terms of Building Code compliance but also to give companies a marketing advantage.”

“CodeMark also provides confidence for those specifying and using certified products that they have been through a quality assurance process and will be accepted as Code-compliant when used as specified.” - John Gardiner, Manager Determinations, Department of Building and Housing
