Evidence is strong that New Zealand’s building and design sectors are generally doing well, with interest in their premier event delighting industry association and event organisers. buildnz designex is set to be one of the best yet, showing that the industry is strong and there is confidence in the future. Endorsed by the Registered Master Builders Federation, Certified Builders Association, BRANZ, the NZ Institute of Architects, Designers Institute, Furniture Association and Lifemark, the event benefits everyone from suppliers through contractors to home and building owners.

Rob Lavender from buildnz designex organiser XPO Exhibitions says suppliers have flocked to the event to such a degree that available floor space is extremely limited. “Obviously there is a lot of confidence that the years ahead will be good for those involved with or connected to building and design. The level of interest from offshore is also high, and that also bodes well.”

buildnz designex is both the country’s biggest industry trade show and a learning opportunity, with onsite seminars to help those attending stay right up-to-date, including many that contribute to professional development requirements for some professions and trades. “This is a trade-only event and is a must-attend on the calendar of everyone serious about their business,” says Rob. “It’s also the only place in New Zealand where those in the industry can see the very latest technology and developments over just a few days.” One of the areas that many visitors will be interested in is energy efficiency. “We believe lighting is an art form and should therefore be beautiful,” says Shinewe Technology research and development manager David Huang. “Lighting is a combination of design, innovation and quality. This philosophy is incorporated into our LED bulbs by utilizing excellent thermal solutions and traditional classic design. Our AC LED solutions provide energy efficient light bulbs that do not require inefficient transformers and heat sinks. This heat efficiency management means that our LED light bulbs will last longer than others.”

Power consumption is also important when considering things like lifts and escalators says KONE’s Terry Viccars. “KONE is a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry and has been committed to understanding the needs of its customers for the past century, providing industry-leading elevators, escalators and moving walks as well as innovative solutions for modernisation and maintenance. At buildnz designex KONE will introduce the latest generation of its MonoSpace® elevator. This new range of elevators is based on years of intensive research of both our customer needs and the possibilities of new technology. The range offers best in class eco-efficiency that cuts the carbon footprint of a building, industry-leading ride comfort for the best possible passenger experience, and award-winning design that helps a building stand out. We’ll also be introducing the latest release of our commercial escalator, the TravelMaster 110, and the infrastructure escalator, the TransitMaster 120. New features include new eco-efficiency, end user safety and visual design options as well as new technical improvements.” Bahman Al Nadaf of Hot Water Heat Pumps Ltd is also passionate about energy efficiency. “Energy is becoming more and more expensive and there is a need for 21st century solutions to utilize renewable sources of energy. Hot Water Heat Pump is a solution provider/manufacturer of water heating and chilling heat pumps, with 31 years of experience. There are many benefits of Performance Plus heat pumps, including providing a uniform desired set temperature throughout the heating season no matter what the weather is like. They’re also cheaper to run because they use renewable energy, and are safer and cleaner to run than a gas or diesel fossil fuel burner as well. Add to that easy installation and operation as well as average efficiency of 300 to 500% and New Zealand manufacture and you’re clearly onto a winner.” Also locally-manufactured is Dimond, a name synonymous with roll forming and roofing in New Zealand for over 40 years. Dimond’s Campbell Glennie says this success is exemplified by the development and introduction of the revolutionary new, award-winning, commercial profile DP955. “It has taken the industry by storm. It’s unique, unrivalled, arch shape provides superior resistance to foot traffic due to the stiffness of the double Arch unlike any other commercial profile on the market. After recent FEA modelling testing it still appears to be the strongest profile on the market. On the back of this success we have commissioned another DP955 Roll Former to be situated in Christchurch, which will assist in the Christchurch rebuild over the coming years and are looking forward to helping rebuild the city with the latest in roofing innovation.”

Innovation is the name of the game for the locally-designed QWICKBUILD system by OUTDURE as well says Craig Fountain. “It’s transforming the way decks are built with a revolutionary system of high-quality, multi-purpose components that eliminate decking construction issues of durability, sustainability, slow installation and structural integrity. After developing the successful range of ECO-DECKING boards, we found there still wasn’t an efficient way to build the structural deck frames, especially on waterproof membranes (typical on leaky buildings) and the industry was calling out for a solution. Every aspect of home construction has progressed with technology, all except the way we build decks. The industry still uses basic building materials and traditional assembly methods. The timber is dramatically affected by moisture and is time-intensive to assemble onsite. QWICKBUILD is a made to measure, pre-assembled deck frame system, using structural aluminium beams and because it is fast and easy to install, the QWICKBUILD system is a cost competitive solution.”

Auckland builder Colin MacFadyen says that after getting frustrated with what moisture does to timber decks and frames, he was pleased to come across QWICKBUILD. “I’ve already installed it in six properties and I am stoked, and so are my clients. You wouldn’t expect it to compare in cost, but it’s simply a case of a well-designed system, using better materials that are faster to install. So when you compare the QWICKBUILD deck system to a pine sub frame for the same cost, it’s a no-brainer.” “We’re rapt with the response to QWICKBUILD from homeowners, builders and architects. We believe we have a solution that solves a lot of problems for a lot of people and are excited to be working on a variety of projects from homes in Christchurch right through to resorts abroad,” adds Craig Fountain. One exhibitor that is committed to ensuring that commercial furniture meets the same requirements as the buildings it’s in is New Zealand manufacturer West Tec. “Environmental footprint, sustainability and the right price to quality ratio are the three main considerations for us,” says Darin Kitching. “Whether fitting out a new building or undertaking an office make over, West Tec can offer a full service from design consultation and spatial planning, through local manufacturing, to project management and installation. With 20 years of experience and many long-term staff we can add tremendous value to any project, and local manufacturing means a fast turnaround.”

Polyflor New Zealand also specialises on what goes inside buildings says Melissa Allington. “We specialise in vinyl flooring for residential and commercial applications, including specialist vinyl for sport and safety applications and for applications where anti-static flooring is required. At buildnz designex we will be launching a whole new colour palette to one of our popular flooring ranges called Expona Design, a 3mm thick luxury vinyl tile or plank product designed for commercial areas. Modern vinyl flooring is full of colour, realistic wood and stone looks and plenty of other options for endless design possibilities. There are also environmental benefits including Ecospecifier Green Tag certification and recyclability.” Another local business that prides itself on quality and sustainability is Terrazzo & Stoneworks NZ. “Terrazzo products are manufactured right here in New Zealand and are suitable for all commercial and residential applications including stair treads, cladding, in-situ flooring, floor tiles, pool surrounds and bench tops,” says Iain Hobson. “Terrazzo is famous for its beauty, versatility and durability which has seen our products specified by New Zealand’s top architects for landmark projects such as the Aotea centre plaza steps, Auckland Art Gallery flooring and Jellicoe wharf street furniture. The original ‘green’ building product, the art of Terrazzo began 500 years ago with the creative recycling of marble and granite chips by Venetian master craftsmen. With three generations of knowledge manufacturing Terrazzo in New Zealand, our experts know how Terrazzo can contribute towards achieving environmental accreditation on any project. There is also our stunning range of Fibonacci Stone tiles, the thinnest and strongest on the market exclusively available in New Zealand through Terrazzo & Stoneworks NZ.”

Site Safe NZ Inc is a not for profit, industry-led organisation that promotes a culture of safety in the New Zealand construction industry. With its extensive membership, partnerships and networks, Site Safe supports and influences a culture of safety through a nationwide network of health and safety professional advisors and industry groups, says Nicky Duff. “This year, Site Safe will assist buildnz designex visitors with finding the best health and safety solution for their company, whether they need an entire health and safety system, training, auditing or coaching. Site Safe will also demonstrate the benefits of AppCon, a health and safety pre-qualification database for tendering subcontractors. Developed and facilitated by Site Safe NZ Inc and Bware, AppCon originated in Canterbury, and has launched nationally earlier this year.” XPO’s Rob Lavender says German industry representatives are back this year in force. “After the successful launch of the ‘Made in Germany’ pavilion at buildnz 2011, the New Zealand German Business Association will again bring together German know-how and Kiwi ingenuity – but on an even bigger scale. This year’s pavilion will be more than 300 sqm with 16 exhibitors confirmed so far, showcasing their products and services ‘Made in Germany’. Amongst them will be Knauf Plasterboard Australia, a subsidiary of the German Knauf Group, which was recently awarded a government contract for the supply of plasterboard in Christchurch. Also participating are well-known brands such as Robert Bosch and Hansgrohe Pty. There’s also Ardex, supplier of tiling, fitting and waterproofing products, Dorma, provider of quality building solutions and a number of other suppliers of building and design-related products. There’s a lot more detail at

“There’s a new part to the show called SPLASH! As well. This sort of commitment, as well as that from companies from all over the region, shows that the signs are good for the industry. SPLASH!, for example, will showcase high-end pool and related equipment, signalling that suppliers see the New Zealand industry as being vibrant and exciting. Builders will similarly see much of interest, and also be able to take advantage of attractive show-only deals and specials.” “There’ll be plenty of fun and valuable networking time too, and one lucky attendee will win a brand-new Ford Mondeo Titanium EcoBoost worth $52,990,” says Rob. “More than 5,000 trade visitors know the value of attending and everyone serious about success should join them.” buildnz designex 2013 will be held Sunday 23rd to Tuesday 25th June at Auckland's ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane. The event is expected to attract more than 5,000 trade visitors. Online pre-registration and entry are free at
