Safe Grip solves safety concern at Vancouver International

24 January 2011

Vancouver Airport Authority is responsible for the development and maintenance of airport infrastructure, overseeing day-to-day operations at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and delivering a high service, low-cost business model.

Its safety conscientious and pro-active management has identified potential risk of slipping on the rubber surfaces of its passenger terminals.

They contacted Tile Safe Products, to provide them with a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution for this issue.

Tile Safe had proposed the Safe Grip Anti-Slip strips to be applied over the pedestrian walking path due to the products outstanding and sustainable slip resistive qualities and suitability to the environment. The Vancouver Airport Authority after a nine months trial of the product has decided to proceed with stage one of the project, installing the Safe Grip product at three passenger terminals.

For practical purposes, the black colour was chosen. Due to the airport operational constraints, Tile Safe had a limited window for the installation at each terminal, which included the curing. As the project was done in early December, the weather was very cold and the installed surface had to be heated to ensure that the product was fully cured by the opening in the morning. The area also had to be completely sealed to ensure that the cold winter chill would not get in.

Tile Safe employees worked tirelessly and completed the installation as planned and now the Vancouver Airport Authority was able to provide a safe passageway to its customers for the Christmas period. Management is very satisfied with the result and have indicated that further Safe Grip anti slip work is planned in the near future.

Over the years, the Safe grip product has proven itself in hundreds of challenging situations and the independent laboratory tests have shown that it has not only achieved the highest slip resistance rating (British Pendulum Class V / C.O.F. 0.98), but it has also retained it over an extended period of time. This means that the floor surface contribution to the risk of slipping when wet will be Very Low not only at installation time but also for the years to come.
