Disabled ramp safety issue solved in a Canadian shopping centre

Coquitlam Centre has disabled ramp safety issue solved with safe grip anti slip strips.

Situated on 57 acres of land in the heart of the Tri-Cities, Coquitlam Centre features over 910,000 square feet of retail on two spacious levels. Coquitlam Centre is the only shopping centre in the Greater Vancouver Regional District offering The Bay, London Drugs, Sears, Sport Chek, Zellers, T&T Supermarket, H&M, Aritzia, Sephora, Lululemon, Coast Mountain Sports, Future Shop, Golf Town and Old Navy all in one convenient location.

Pro-active centre management during their regular safety review raised concerns about the safety of the disabled ramp in front of the main entrance to the centre. The existing concrete surface has worn over the years and the line marking paint has further reduced the surface slip resistive qualities. To provide adequate safety to the public, management was looking for a better solution, which provides the required non-slip surface in an environment which during the colder months can also get icy.

They contacted Tile Safe Products, to provide them with a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution for this issue.

Tile Safe had proposed the Safe Grip Ultimate non-slip strips to be applied over the existing area to mitigate the risk. The Safe Grip product was suggested, due to the products outstanding and sustainable slip resistive qualities and suitability to the environment.

To ensure continuation and improvement of the existing high visibility, the safety yellow colour was chosen to be used for the anti slip strips. The Safe Grip Ultimate strips were installed over this surface.

The project was completed on agreed time and budget and management is very satisfied with the results. They have already indicated that further surface safety / anti slip work within the centre is going to take place in the near future.

Over the years, the Safe Grip product has proven itself in hundreds of challenging situations and the independent laboratory tests have shown that it has not only achieved the highest slip resistance rating (British Pendulum Class V / C.O.F. 0.98), but it has also retained it over an extended period of time. This means that the floor surface contribution to the risk of slipping when wet will be Very Low not only at installation time but also for the years to come.
