SHADOWclad provides rustic chic on luxurious Hamilton Island
When challenged to create an ‘iconic’ structure for the recently completed Yacht Club and luxury Villa complex on Hamilton Island, renowned architect Walter Barda looked towards the sea. Sails and water naturally became the inspiration for this remarkable new Yacht Club structure and surrounding resort.
The intended vibe for the 35 detached villas, built to 5 star luxury, is a tranquil serenity with a distinctly Australian edge. Drawing on textures and natural materials to gain an earthy feel, the architects chose SHADOWclad® by Carter Holt Harvey Woodproducts to be used extensively internally and externally. This provides the ever-desirable synergy between inside and outside. And by bringing texture inside instead of traditional interior cladding, the result is an interesting contrast of smart but rustic.
In this project, the vertical grooved texture with a pre-primed powder coated finish was selected then painted in natural muted colours of khaki and coffee. (SHADOWclad is also available in an unprimed, natural surface for staining.) The result is a truly luxurious and liveable interior.
Selected for its durability in a coastal environment, SHADOWclad possesses a number of other benefits. SHADOWclad is strong and impact resistant which is paramount in rental properties. It’s lightweight and manufactured from sustainably managed plantation timber and is available with FSC Chain of Custody certification, which contributes to Green Star credit points.
SHADOWclad comes in sheets 1200 mm wide and lengths of 2440 or 2745 mm with a shiplap weather groove joint on the long edge of each sheet.
SHADOWclad is treated to H3, which protects the surface against rot and insect infestation. It can also be used for structural bracing when directly fixed to framing and can be supplied with a custom aluminium flashing system.
According to the architect, the villas provide ‘a kind of serpentine ‘wake’ of rippling rooflines’ to the central Yacht Club. They nestle well into the lush landscape, crafted by Jamie Durie. With strong environmental credentials, SHADOWclad is the natural solution. And with the exquisite Whitsunday views, it’s a tribute to the architect that the villas feel at home in their surroundings.
