Boral Timber flooring featured in QPAC redevelopment
Following an extensive renovation, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre now boasts two freshly refurbished theatres – the Concert Hall and the Lyric Theatre – providing a stunning aesthetic, enhanced acoustics and greatly improved wheelchair access.
Contributing to the striking new look of the Concert Hall is Boral Timber’s flooring in a Blackbutt species, which has been used throughout, including on the platforms of an impressive new seating unit.
This native species was chosen for its hardness and durability as well as the light cream and brown hues, which provide the Concert Hall with a light, spacious ambience.
“The quality and colour of the timber significantly contribute to the revitalisation of the venue,” said Richard Coulson, Director, Cox Rayner Architects. “The acoustics have also been considerably improved, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.”
A 45x19mm board width was selected, enabling it to be bent to fit the 27 metre radius of the theatre. Using Selleys Liquid Nails adhesives, the flooring was glued down to prevent any movement of the floor once laid. Ironbark nosing was then installed on each of the steps of the aisle to provide a hardy and highly visible tread.
“We’re delighted with the finished look and have had a great response from our regular visitors who are really impressed with the transformation,” said Bill Jessop, Executive Manager of Production Services, Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
