Call for entries from architects, building designers and students.

Boral is pleased to announce the launch of its 2010 conceptual residential design award program for architects, building designers and architectural students.

Celebrating innovative yet realistic residential building design, the Boral Design Award this year invites entrants to respond to the challenge of Australia’s changing housing needs and reduced land sizes and to consider adaptability, sustainability and affordability.

With the brief to design a detached residential dwelling with a floor area of 125sqm and its landscape, it is rewarding inspiration with a $34,000 prize pool.

For their design concepts, entrants are asked to specify from a range of selected Boral products including timber, bricks, pavers, decorative concrete, roof tiles, windows and bi-fold doors.

Glenn Simpkin, Boral General Manager of Marketing & Sales, said Boral is serious about considering tomorrow’s housing challenges today.

“We are excited to be associated with an Award that strives for new directions in the suburban built environment. It’s also an opportunity to explore the continuing relevance of our clay, concrete and timber products in a creative and sustainable context,” he said.

In 2010, the jury of industry representatives includes Tone Wheeler from Environa Studio in Sydney, Paul Owen from Owen and Vokes in Brisbane, Nick Drougas from Metricon in Melbourne, Glenn Simpkin from Boral and Jury Chair Andrew Mackenzie, editor-in-chief of Architectural Review Australia magazine.

Boral Design Award entrants must submit a written component and digital imagery of up to five physical models or 3D renders of their concept. The entry pack, in addition to resources, can be downloaded at http://www.designaward.boral.com.au.

The 2010 Boral Design Award opens on 1 May and closes on 30 September. In the professional category, first prize is $20,000 and second prize is $10,000. In the student category, first prize is $4,000.
