The secret of success: Expertise coupled with inventive spirit
Seven years ago, WE-EF's world première of the RFL500 LED street and area lighting luminaire together with the OLC® One LED Concept lens technology caught the industry's attention at Light+Building 2008. Behind those innovations were many years of intensive LED development.
WE-EF is a pioneer in LED exterior lighting. The company implemented its first large-scale LED project almost 15 years ago with the Sony Center in Berlin. The company has consistently built on its expertise in LED luminaire development, and today has an extensive portfolio of street and area luminaires as well as architectural lighting solutions. The development of high-quality, efficient LED lenses is part of WE-EF's IOS® Innovative Optical System programme and a core competency of the company.
The IOS® development programme comes under the direct supervision of Dr Nguyen Van Quang, a veteran employee of WE-EF for more than 20 years. Dr Quang leads WE-EF's lighting development department, working together with his team in a lighting laboratory outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment. Every product that goes into production at WE-EF must first pass through Dr Quang's laboratory. For example, the goniophotometer, with its facility for rotating luminaires, provides precision data on lighting properties such as illuminance and light distribution.
All LEDs undergo intensive testing before being integrated into production. "We do not rely on the manufacturer's specifications alone," Dr Quang explains. "The data we collect guarantee high quality throughout all WE-EF luminaires."
Lighting developers worldwide are facing new challenges with LED lens technology. WE-EF, coupled the expertise and inventive spirit of Dr Quang and his team, has invested in the technology necessary to produce LED lenses that are precision-targeted, provide controlled light distribution and are reflection-free. From computer simulations and prototypes manufactured in-house, WE-EF is able to achieve and deliver the highest level of quality in production lenses.
As with the previous generation of WE-EF reflectors, the IOS® concept remains the focus of LED lens development. "We are not just developing one lens for one luminaire; we are working on a logically structured lens system that can be used in different WE-EF product series," according to Dr Quang. As a result, WE-EF now has a sophisticated range of symmetric and asymmetric LED lenses for a wide range of applications, both for street and area luminaires, and for architectural lighting.
