The unique atmosphere of the pier jutting 200 metres into the Baltic Sea in the German resort town of Heiligendamm invites all to stroll along it and stay for a while. The view towards land opens up into an architectural panorama of historical spas, guest houses and grand villas that once hosted a variety of banquets and events.

In the opposite direction, there are expansive vistas of sky and sea. The sunset, in particular, attracts residents and holidaymakers alike to the pier. However, even as twilight fades and dusk sets in, the pier with its scenic lighting continues to draw people. The pier's inviting atmosphere is the result of a finely tuned lighting concept realised entirely with WE-EF luminaires.

The immediate proximity of the saltwater sea posed the greatest technical challenge in this project, as did the design and static specifications. WE-EF's answer to severe weather and the aggressive marine climate is its 5CE superior corrosion protection system. In this system, material selection and processing as well as multi-layer coatings ensure reliable protection and a long service life for the luminaires and masts. WE-EF undertook customised modifications of its standard products to meet the special on-site requirements of the pier.

The new WE-EF VLR130 LED linear mounted luminaires were the first component selected for this project. WE-EF designed a new bracket for mounting these luminaires on the rails of the pier. The LED driver and luminaire were installed separately from each other, because all supply units for the luminaires are placed in one box under the pier. The VLR130 LED luminaires are elegantly suited to the rails of the pier, and their asymmetric light distribution precisely accentuates the walkways.

EFC120-RE luminaires, installed under the benches, provide an additional lighting accent for the pier. Normally installed as inground uplights, for this application a specially designed flange plate was developed to support the luminaire.

Four unmodified FLD111 projectors are used to illuminate the 'Heiligendamm' sign at the end of the pier. This bright accent beckons seafaring guests to stop by.

The Heiligendamm pier project once again demonstrates WE-EF's ability to adapt existing products to unique and specialised solutions.
