Supaslat Driftwood improve acoustics and complete maritime theme
Supawood’s Supaslat Driftwood slatted ceiling panels were the preferred choice by the design team for the fit-out of the ground floor foyer, function centre and café precinct of a new motel in north Wollongong. The facilities are setting new standards for business meetings and form part of a multimillion dollar residential, accommodation and function centre development aimed at attracting new business enterprise to Wollongong and encouraging industry partnerships with the nearby university campus.
Drawing inspiration from the local history of Towradgi Beach, the designers called for an interior concept that is a contemporary interpretation of the local sand dunes which are so ascribed to the area. The designers found the unique rustic weathered appearance of Supaslat Driftwood slatted ceiling panels ideal for the feature ceilings as the product complimented the maritime theme and achieved the acoustic criteria they required.
Supaslat Driftwood ceiling panels are made up of slats of wood which are prefinished by hand etching and coating a specific grade and species of hardwood timber so that every slat is unique. In this project the designers requested that the panel finish be left as rough and uneven as possible. The resulting finish shows every knot, crack and grain in the timber, a characteristic of timber that has been aged by the elements. However, when combined with the rest of the décor design, the rough white ceiling slats are refreshingly contemporary and give the reception and function areas increased dimension and atmosphere.
The designers were also faced with amplified noise in the wide open areas and needed to reduce noise by finding a suitable acoustic solution. An added bonus in choosing Supaslat Driftwood slatted panels was that these ceiling panels are supplied in an acoustic option. This project is an excellent example of the creative and functional use of this Supawood product.
