Sky's the limit
As part of the Hornsby RSL Club's refurbishment, a custom glass sliding roof system was designed and constructed by Kennovations to provide an ambient solution to their alfresco dining terrace on the first floor of the busy club.
“The objective was to open up the outdoor section of the restaurant, bar and café to be a large dining courtyard that is weatherproof.” said Scott, Project Manager at Kennovations, “We designed a solution that would be easy-to-use, reliable, retractable, fully engineered and certified.”
Since the existing structure of the building was already in place, the retrofit retractable roof required additional structural members that would support its weight of 550 KG. Fixed rails made of painted mild steel were welded and bolted onto the existing structure as determined by engineering requirements outlined by Kennovations.
The sliding roof is made up of a 6 × 2 m moving structural steel and glass panel that is fully retractable along two fixed rails and a moving panel. A smart 12 V control system with encoder feedback constantly monitors the roof position (open and close) and speed (acceleration and deceleration), allowing the operator control at the switch of the button.
The 6.5 × 1.8 m glass panel is made of 13.5 mm heat strengthened laminate and is trafficable and clear, which gives a remarkably stylish finish in lieu of traditional louver and hatch products.
“The new glass sliding roof has provided a stylish alternative to traditional products, aiding us in taking advantage of our new alfresco area whether it be rain, hail or shine whilst maintaining natural light to the area,” explained Mario Machado, CEO of Hornsby RSL Club, “Our customers are now happy to use the area even when it is raining enabling us to use the space 100% of the time.”
