North Shore Hospital's new translucent barrel vault atrium roof.

This recently completed project will help you understand the benefits of our 74mm polycarbonate system and showcases it’s suitability for top end commercial developments.

Everbright E610 clear was installed recently at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney NSW, as a large translucent atrium barrel vault roof structure. Everbright E610 was extruded and supplied in 8mtr curved panels and in 600mm configurations. Our panels simply clip together, making the installation process rapid, as our product only requires to be joined every 600mm on site. Everbright E610 free spanned 7.7mtr, incorporating Locking System LS2.5. Locking system LS2.5 simply means there are 5 aluminium locking bars required out of every 6 chambers. See design loads, which shows you in more detail the different locking systems available. The translucent atrium total area was 240sqm consisting of a panel length of 8mtr x 30mtr. The installation time on this project was two days and four men were available on site.

The geometry details for this project:

  • Free span 7.7 m/ radius 10.748 m
  • Slope 20 degrees
  • Midpoint height 700 mm
  • Curved length with eaves 8 m

The design brief for this development was for a elegant looking translucent system, which would utilize all the natural light available, providing a striking Architectural feature, with clear unsupported spans.

An important consideration due to the nature of the facility was for a product that had superior fire performance characteristics. Our product was selected due to the heavy duty nature of our 74mm polycarbonate panels and our products resistance to hazardous fire conditions. Our product does not ignite, produce flaming droplets or release dangerous smoke emissions in the extreme fire situations.

The atrium design intention was for a superior looking product that would enhance this area with a clean fresh modern look, creating the correct ambience and comfortable environment for the hospital.

The specification also stipulated a system that was 100% fully trafficable, without requiring the need for safety mesh, and for a product that was self cleaning, extremely strong and durable.

Additional clients instructions were for a product that had superior thermal and acoustic performance. Other key factors were for a product which has a long life span. Makrolon 1243 is the material used in our polycarbonate roofing system, which is part of the worldwide Bayer Group.

Everbright E610 comes with a manufacture’s worldwide 10 year warranty and the panels have a life expectancy in excess of 35 years. Clear was the colour selected with 73% light transmissions.

Everbright E610’s increased free span capabilities, made our polycarbonate system an excellent choice for this development giving the desired effect, as it is one of the strongest translucent materials available in the world today. The Everbright E610 system creates a unique visual appearance and minimizes structural requirements making use of all the natural light. Since less structure is required with our system less shadows are created, and as such the natural light translucency is at its full potential.

Furthermore our system is rapid to install, which helped keep to the builders stringent deadline.

Our polycarbonate system give a seamless and continuous line, with no steel frame work spoiling the visual effect. E610 Integral locking bars hide the aspect of where a panel starts and where it finishes, so it becomes a continuous system giving a uniformed and conformed design feature. Creating an architectural flare, that isn't possible with any other polycarbonate system available on the market. Our system only needs to be secured with washer and screw fixings provided to both the lower and higher end of the panels, all the joints are self sealing once the integral locking bar is fitted. Other systems would necessitate the need for a framed grid work support system across the entire roof.

E610 polycarbonate panels incorporate an excellent safety factor. All loading criteria are based on 0.75kN/sqm and a 50% safety factor as part of a standard specification detailing.
