New family hot-spot in Townsville
Townsville families have a new destination, the recently completed playground at Sanctum, thanks to the collaborative efforts of local development group Maidment, Hywel Jones Landscape Architects, and Brisbane-based playground company Urban Play.
Since the playground was officially opened in May, Sanctum has become a destination in its own right. Families from near and far have been flocking to the playground like bees to a honeypot.
“We have had a fantastic response from Sanctum and the surrounding community… The residents have been out in force using the equipment and parkland,”says Kent Burbidge.
Located at Mount Low, just 15 minutes north of the Townsville CBD, the Sanctum playground caters to children of all ages and abilities and features award-winning KOMPAN play equipment, which has been designed around the three core pillars of health, learning and environment.
The playground showcases the first Multispinner carousel in Queensland, which is a fun and social form of balance training for children, and a large elevated structure that has 360 degree play and a traffic rescue theme, encouraging imaginative play. The space provides maximum play value, is both stimulating and challenging for children, and offers a new experience every time they visit.
“The Sanctum playground is an amazing setting that caters to every age group. It combines an exhilarating experience with maximum safety, so I’m not surprised that it’s been a big drawcard.”
“Maidment spent a lot of time, energy and resources researching the play component of their development. They wanted a design that was cutting edge, while still encouraging free play and keeping kids and parents active and entertained,” says Ben Urban, Director of Urban Play.
Throughout each stage of the development process, Maidment ensured that the Sanctum community would be a family friendly environment. The estate boasts 28 hectares of parkland and offers recreational areas, BBQ facilities, and fitness stations. The addition of the new playground equipment has helped to further develop an original sense of place and has enhanced the sense of community for residents, as well as stimulating a surge in sales.
“Our experience has taught us to ensure we provide the best playground and parkland experience possible for our residents. Sanctum is a family friendly estate and it was important to have equipment that appeals to all ages, from toddlers to teenagers… We designed two specific areas to cater to 2-6 year olds and children aged 6 and over... Once we started looking at the equipment available, there were too many items that we couldn’t leave out.”
“All the Urban Play staff were very professional, easy to work with and they just got on with the job with a minimum of fuss. Ben Urban was heavily involved in the early stages when we were deciding on pieces to go in the playground. He was offering us new equipment that hadn’t been released to the market, which was refreshing rather than the usual method where you pick from a catalogue and order… [The best part is], the equipment Urban Play supplies comes with a lifetime warranty and is arguably the most durable in the marketplace,” says Kent Burbidge.
By designing and installing innovative playgrounds, Urban Play is committed to promoting healthy physical exercise and providing unique and engaging play spaces that both kids and parents adore.
Urban Play has a proven track-record of working with councils and developers across Queensland to create destination playgrounds and has been acknowledged for excellence in playground design, after winning four awards in two consecutive years at the Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) Regional Annual Awards.
Maidment and Urban Play have an aligned vision of providing engaging and inspiring spaces where communities can come together and the popularity of the Sanctum playground is testament to the success of their partnership.
