Macquarie Park public artwork finally takes flight
‘Flight’, a public artwork comprising of three gigantic feathers on 118 Talavera Road, Macquarie Park, has been successfully commissioned adding a splash of culture and character to the commercial district.
Ross Shepherd of Site Image Public Art Consultants was the artist for the project ‘Flight’, who conceived the concept of a series of large scale elevated feathers on the main roadway frontage of this new Goodman commercial building. The three ‘Flight’ sculptures are located on the roadside at the pedestrian entry to the Fujitsu building, being proposed to uplift office workers and generally add visual interest and character to the adjoining Talavera Road streetscape.
Ross proposed a series of concepts in response to Ryde City Council’s policies for public artworks to accompany new developments to enrich the urban fabric and cultural content of the area.
“The ‘Flight’ concept is a response to the ‘Ducks Crossing’ signs along Talavera Road,” says Ross. “The impact of urbanisation on natural systems, habitat and wildlife are central to the theme. Research revealed there had been an ongoing issue of ducks dying on this section of roadway while crossing to reach open space that is now occupied by the series of new buildings. The contradiction of the signs and loss of habitat, environmental connection and wildlife is now a worthy theme for the public artwork.”
Ross worked closely with Kennovations in developing concepts from early concept stage by exploring and generating specific design options for the artwork. This involved investigating kinetic artwork versions, working with the artist to develop detailing, drafting structural design and developing options in 3D for team review. Design considerations included the dynamic effects of wind, rain and sun as well as durability for materials, construction and fabrication.
