The Great Northern Hotel in Byron Bay had its 1930s roof renewed by Monier Roofing.

Monier Roofing has helped the iconic 1930s Byron Bay Great Northern Hotel retain its character and integrity after its roof was replaced.

Marseille terracotta tiles, a French-inspired profile, was chosen to fit in with the style of the period. The colour chosen for the tiles was a mix of Tanbark and Sunset, which provided the right hue to assimilate the old with the new.

The proximity of the hotel to the ocean helped with the decision to use terracotta tiles, due to the hardy nature of the tiles allowing them to withstand salt, wind and spray. The colours of Monier's terracotta tiles are fade-resistant, and are achieved through a specialized firing process that bakes the glazed tiles at 1096°C. The tiles are also resistant to rust and corrosion, and have a 50 year guarantee on both colour and performance.

The revamp of the hotel also provided the opportunity to improve the sustainability of the building, with the terracotta providing thermal qualities that both keep the cold out and retain heat.
