Hoddle House wins Kevin Borland Masonry Award at Think Brick Awards.

The renovation and extension of Hoddle House designed by Freadman White has been awarded the Kevin Borland Masonry Award at the 2016 Think Brick Awards. This resounding success at Australia’s richest design awards saw architects Ilana Freadman and Michael White of Freadman White presented with a prize of $10,000.

In 2014, the masonry award was expanded to include residential projects. This provides a greater stage for concrete masonry to be showcased, and rewards architects who have discovered the design potential of concrete masonry in either commercial or residential built projects.

The Hoddle House project in Melbourne was an alteration and addition to an existing 1930s Art Deco style brick dwelling. The existing residence contains a bedroom wing and the rear addition provides new living areas. Externally, the addition offers an impression of solidity, reminiscent of the existing 1930s brick dwelling it is connected to. However, sheer curtaining coupled with variegated window heights and depths blurs this static formalism.

The visually striking award winning design, conceived by Freadman White, utilised Adbri Masonry Architectural Brick in the Ebony colour to create a distinctive aesthetic appeal with expert craftsmanship.

“Our client, a young family, required additional space for their young children to explore. It was essential that both the existing and new spaces were planned to make efficient use of the old while achieving greater volume within the addition. In the addition, the exterior roof form is hidden from view. It is not until one experiences the internal spaces of the addition that the angular forms of the hip roof type appear, in the form of dramatically raking ceilings,” explains Ilana Freadman of Freadman White.

The dark brick surface of the project is punctured by large pieces of glass, both fixed as pop out windows and sliding doors within wide timber frames.

“We’re so pleased that Freadman White’s project has received the due recognition for this inspired design,” remarked Adbri Masonry Marketing Manager, Karl Wood. “The project is a fantastic example of how minimalist building materials such as Architectural Brick can be utilised to achieve such stunning aesthetics and we thank Freadman White for choosing to work with Adbri brick on this project.”

This is the second consecutive year Adbri Masonry has been part of a winning team presented with the Kevin Borland Masonry Award, following the inspiring ACT for Kids Child and Family Centre of Excellence project designed by m3architecture which took out the 2015 prize.

Adbri Masonry has also shared a finalist spot in the Bruce Mackenzie Landscape Award category with Outerspace Landscape Architects for the Central Reserve project in Blackwood Park, Adelaide. In developing this feature reserve and play space, the Outerspace Landscape Architects were seeking a retaining material that would help manage the existing slope, add value and character to the play space and blend with the natural surroundings. The chosen material was Adbri Designer Masonry Shotblast which allowed ease of construction, was capable of achieving the desired curve and was cost effective.
