Centor hat trick with Queensland Export Award win

Centor, a Queensland-based window and door system innovator, last night made an award hat trick, winning the Queensland Premier’s Export Award for Small to Medium Manufacturer.

Centor’s hat trick comes after being the first company to ever win two awards at last week’s Lord Mayor’s Business Awards.

Centor managing director Nigel Spork said Centor’s export growth throughout the global financial crisis allowed them to continue to invest heavily in innovation.

“Expanding into foreign markets gives us the resources to invest in innovation, which is what drives our success,” he said.

“In 1998, Centor employed just 23 people. Thanks to over a decade of 30 per cent compounding growth, we now have 160 staff worldwide.”

Mr Spork said the turning point for the company came in 1998 when Centor invented the modern weather-sealed bifold door.

“A few years later, we invested 40,000 hours of research and development into our insect screen for bifold-scale openings.

“Since my grandfather founded Centor in 1951, innovation has always been a core value.

“This award recognises the hard work that has gone into both our commitment to innovation and to building our international business,” Mr Spork said.

Centor’s largest export markets are the United Kingdom followed by the United States, with exports to Asia also strong.

Centor operates globally from headquarters in Brisbane, with regional headquarters in Birmingham (UK), Chicago (USA) and Nanjing (China). Centor previously won a Queensland Premier’s Export Award in 2008.

This award is among several achievements for Centor this year.

  • Centor won the IBM Award for Innovation and the Australia TradeCoast Award for Business Growth at the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Business Awards on October 15, 2010;
  • The Centor Twinpoint lock won the Design Award for Most Innovative Component from the Australian Window Association in September. The Twinpoint, Centor’s first ever lock, is a stylish and secure dropbolt system;
  • The Centor S1E Eco-Screen won the New Product Award (Doors and Windows) at the Sydney designEX event in April, the design and architecture industry’s premier exhibition;
  • Mr Spork won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Products category for the Northern Region in July. He is now a finalist in the national award, to be announced on 24 November.
