Boral Timber has announced that its Boral Silkwood engineered hardwood flooring product has been independently tested as being compliant with the Green Star Indoor Environment Quality credits IEQ-11 and IEQ-13.

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) enables buildings to achieve Green Star ratings. The GBCA’s Indoor Environment Quality (IEQ) credits encourage the use of products that minimise the amount of volatile organic compounds emitted by building materials. FORAY Laboratories, a NATA accredited laboratory, has certified that Boral Silkwood contains the low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) required by the GBCA under the Green Star IEQ credits. This certification means that Boral Silkwood can contribute to the Green Star rating of building projects such as office fit-outs and new builds.

Boral Silkwood has also been certified as being low formaldehyde emitting so it can also contribute to the formaldehyde minimisation credit in the Green Star tools. Formaldehyde is one type of VOC which is commonly used to manufacture building materials, cleaning fluids and other household products.

VOCs can be emitted from a range of products used in buildings and interiors such as paint, carpet, fabrics, glues and plastic products and can affect the quality of indoor air. A building’s indoor environment quality can have a significant impact on the health, wellbeing and satisfaction of its occupants and can also affect worker productivity and staff retention .

“Selecting the right materials for a fit-out presents opportunities to maximise building ratings and improve indoor environment quality”, said Robyn Barnes, Marketing Manager of Boral Timber. “Specifiers, building designers and architects are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of choosing building materials which reduce a building’s chemical emissions. Independent certification for Boral Silkwood to meet the IEQ and formaldehyde minimisation credits gives reassurance that the timber floor solution can contribute to the building’s overall Green Star rating.”

Available in a range of popular Australian hardwood species, Boral Silkwood enables a much faster installation than traditional 19mm solid strip timber boards. With its pre finished surface, it avoids the mess and time associated with sanding and finishing and allows occupants to walk on the floor within hours of installation.

Boral Timber has also achieved Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) chain of custody certification (AS 4707-2006) for its timber products. This means that timber used to produce Boral Timber's hardwood flooring, decking and structural timber has been sourced from certified, legal and sustainably managed resources. The Australian Forestry Standard Scheme also has mutual recognition by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Scheme (PEFC) - the world's largest forest management certifier. This AFS/PEFC chain of custody certification means that Boral Timber products, including Boral Silkwood, can also contribute to the timber credit in the materials category for Green Star.
