Adbri Masonry was specified for the rebuild of the Western Grandstand at the iconic Adelaide Oval. The Grandstand specified the use of a unique 190 mm x 190 mm x 190 mm concrete Besser Block. At the time, this block was not part of a standard Adbri range, however, the opportunity to be involved with this iconic project led Australia’s leading masonry manufacturer to develop a solution specifically for use in the redevelopment.

Adbri Masonry took the initial specification and challenge of producing such a unique project on board and created an innovative block specific to the redevelopment. The block contained a dummy joint within a standard 20.01 concrete Besser Block. This dummy joint created the illusion of two blocks laid side by side when in actual fact it was just a single Besser Block. The project also utilized coloured and textured finishes with Adbri’s Honed surface texture boosting the appeal of these high visibility walls.

In order to adhere to tight time restrictions, Adbri Masonry’s Ottoway manufacturing plant created a project specific honed mix with an increased saturation of charcoal oxide to enrich the block colour. Enhanced levels of cement and aggregate were also needed to ensure the desired honed finish was achieved.

To complement the iconic surrounds, the architect also required a high quality block that lasted over time to preserve the iconic buildings refurbishment. In order to minimize chipping from the face of the blocks, Adbri worked with a local contractor to create customized honing disks. The disks contained 25 percent more embedded diamonds than the standard block. The 15,000 honed charcoal blocks not only acted as a preservation material for the structure, but they also enhanced the unique design of the grandstand.

"Due to project time restrictions, it was essential to create a hassle free build," explained Adbri’s marketing manager, Karl Wood. "Adbri’s proud to have contributed an innovative new product for such an iconic project. The Adbri Masonry team produced and supplied all required products ahead of time and we were really happy with the consistent high quality of the blocks supplied. Adbri Masonry’s contribution to the project meant minimal wear and tear to the block structures used and a timely production."
