A perfect source of information by SCHOTT
A glass cube equipped with several monitors serves as the main element of a guidance system at Frankfurter Airport Centre. This information terminal encased in bright special-purpose glass helps visitors to the office and conference centre at Frankfurt Airport find their way around and provides access to travel data via touch screens. The SCHOTT technology group was responsible for designing and realising this solution.
The main requirements for the information terminal included an unusual design, a robust surface and the integration of monitors both with and without touch screens. The so-called metamorphosis glass “Mirona” contributed to its exquisite design. When placed in front of a light background, this mineral glass turns transparent. In front of a dark surface, it acts as a brilliant, silver coloured mirror. A razor-thin special coating from SCHOTT is what makes this effect possible. It plays with reflections and transmission, thanks to the special way in which it refracts light. This creates the impression that the images on the monitors are actually floating on top of the glass object while the technical inner workings remain hidden behind the reflective surface. SCHOTT even installed a nearly invisible type of “impact protection” along the edges of the glass cube to protect it from being damaged, by a passenger’s suitcase, for instance.
As an important partner in this project, SCHOTT Architecture + Design not only provided the special glass, but was also responsible for realising, planning and installing the glass structure and the interior steel frame, the hard and software, the electrical work and for programming the media control system.
“Whereas we used to be more of a glass vendor, we are gradually becoming more of a one stop shop for complete systems and thus a direct point of contact for architects,” explains Dr. Elmar Günther, Strategic Development & Communications at SCHOTT Architecture + Design.
The installation of this guidance system was part of the overall renovation of the Frankfurter Airport Centre. The mere size of the complex placed high demands on being able to assist passengers and visitors in finding their way around. For this reason, the client felt it was very important to install an efficient “navigation system” that is also quite attractive in terms of its appearance. As an office and conference centre that is directly linked with Frankfurt Airport, the Frankfurt Airport Centre serves companies who are interested in combining easy accessibility and mobility with a comfortable surrounding atmosphere.
